LKA Philosophy

Project-Based Learning (PBL) in early childhood education is an inquiry-based, hands-on approach where young children explore topics in depth through meaningful projects. It encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking by allowing children to investigate real-world questions and problems in a developmentally appropriate way.

Key Features of Project-Based Learning in Early Childhood

  1. Child-Led Exploration – Projects begin with children's interests, questions, or observations, making learning more engaging and meaningful.
  2. Hands-On Investigation – Children explore through play, experiments, field trips, and interactions with materials.
  3. Collaboration – Encourages teamwork, social skills, and communication as children work together on their projects.
  4. Multi-Disciplinary Learning – Projects integrate multiple subjects such as literacy, math, science, and art in a natural way.
  5. Process-Oriented – Focuses on the learning journey rather than just the final product, emphasizing problem-solving and critical thinking.
  6. Documentation & Reflection – Teachers and children document progress through drawings, photos, or discussions to reflect on learning.

Examples of PBL in Early Childhood

  • "Our Community" Project: Children explore their neighborhood, visit local businesses, create maps, and role-play community helpers.
  • "Caterpillar to Butterfly" Project: Observing caterpillars in a classroom habitat, recording changes, making predictions, and creating art about the life cycle.
  • "Building Bridges" Project: Exploring different bridge structures, testing materials, and building models using blocks or recycled materials.

Benefits of PBL in Early Childhood

  • Encourages critical thinking and problem-solving.
  • Supports language development through discussions and storytelling.
  • Fosters social-emotional skills like cooperation and empathy.
  • Builds confidence and a love for learning.

We also recognize the impact that free play makes on children’s healthy development. Therefore teachers will intentionally arrange their environment to encourage children to;
1. learn language,
2. stimulate their curiosity,
3. explore their surroundings,
4. gain social skills,
5. Attempt to problem solve,
6. develop gross and fine motor skills,
7. gain self confidence.

Knowledge & Success

At Little Kids Academy, we believe that families are a child's first and most important teachers. Children thrive when families actively participate in their learning environment. To strengthen the connection between home and LKA, we’ve introduced communication books for each child, serving as a primary bridge to keep families engaged and informed.

Discover Your Potential with Little Kids Academy

We take pride in utilizing the expertise of our Japanese-speaking teachers. Several of our educators were born and raised in Japan, bringing a deep understanding of the language and culture. With their knowledge, Japanese language and cultural influences are seamlessly integrated into each classroom’s curriculum. For instance, in preschool, we celebrate "Japanese Day," where a Japanese teacher leads the class entirely in Japanese, teaching both the language and cultural traditions. This immersive experience fosters not only language acquisition but also an appreciation of diverse cultures.
